2 Nye County sheriff’s deputies arrested in inmate’s death

Two deputies from the Nye County Sheriff’s Office were taken into custody on Sunday in connection with the June death of an inmate, Sheriff Joe McGill announced in a press release. The sheriff said the deputies face charges of involuntary manslaughter, inhumanity to a captive, and neglect of duty resulting in the death of Stevie Miller, a 30‑year‑old Pahrump resident, on June 10. The release did not identify the deputies. According to McGill, on June 9 deputies pursued Miller in a high‑speed chase northbound on Highway 160 from Highway 372 after she fled the scene of a collision with two separate vehicles. She was apprehended on foot. Miller appeared uninjured from the crash but was under the influence of narcotics or alcohol, the sheriff noted. She was transported to Desert View Hospital for a blood draw and then booked into the Nye County Detention Center on multiple charges. Miller appeared before Pahrump Justice Court on June 10, where she was ordered held on bail. Later that day she was found unresponsive in her cell. Despite efforts by deputies, medical personnel, and Pahrump Valley Fire‑Rescue Services, she was pronounced dead at Desert View Hospital. Through a criminal investigation, probable cause was established to obtain arrest warrants for two sheriff’s office deputies. Both surrendered for booking on Sunday.
