Dalglish and Carney win PFA Merit Awards

Former England attacking midfielder Carney was part of the Arsenal side that completed a historic quadruple in the 2006‑07 season, capturing the league, FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Women’s Cup – the predecessor to the Women’s Champions League. After two seasons with the Chicago Red Stars, she returned to Birmingham City in 2011, the club where her career began. Carney netted an extra‑time equaliser as Birmingham won the FA Cup the following campaign. She joined Chelsea in late 2015 and helped the club secure a WSL and FA Cup treble in 2017‑18, later serving as team captain before retiring from playing in 2019. On the international stage, Carney made her England debut at 17 in 2005. She went on to score 32 goals in 144 appearances for the Lionesses and was part of the squad that finished third at the 2015 Women’s World Cup, one of eight major tournaments she contested for England. She also represented Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics. Since hanging up her boots, the 39‑year‑old has built a career as a broadcaster and pundit. In 2023 she was appointed by the UK Government to chair an independent review into the future of domestic women’s football.
