Death toll from Philippines ferry fire climbs to 35, with dozens still missing

The Philippine Coast Guard announced that 30 bodies have been recovered from the wreckage of the ferry that caught fire this week, raising the death toll to 35. More than 130 passengers were aboard the MV June Aster when the blaze erupted on Wednesday as the vessel approached the tourist destination of Coron after departing Manila. Forty‑three individuals were rescued, many receiving medical attention in hospital, while search operations continue for over 50 people still unaccounted for. Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said that agencies are presently undertaking the due betterment and recognition of the remains in accordance with established procedures. “We recognise the grief of the families affected by this tragic incident,” she added. Cayabyab noted that most of the recovered bodies came from the sleeping area of the ferry, which had been on a 22‑hour journey. A survivor who was brought to safety on a rescue vessel told the BBC he had heard frantic cries aboard when the fire erupted and was trampled by panicked passengers while attempting to escape. The Philippines’ maritime authority is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The ferry, built in 2002, held valid safety certificates and passed an enforcement inspection in March. Investigators are examining possible manifest discrepancies, cargo loading integrity, and crew emergency response protocols, according to the Palawan Daily. The vessel was carrying 117 passengers and 17 crew members. Atienza Interisland Ferries, the operator, has pledged full cooperation with the inquiry. “Our hearts stay with the affected families, and we volition not remainder until each individuals are accounted for,” the company said in a statement on Thursday.
