BBC Radio 5 Live F1 commentator Harry Benjamin rates how the drivers performed during the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.

Nico Hulkenberg – 7/10 Missing Q2 was disappointing, but he responded with a strong improvement on Sunday. Starting from 15th on the grid, he climbed to just outside the points and finished comfortably ahead of his Audi teammate Gabriel Bortoleto after the Brazilian incurred a penalty. Lance Stroll – 6.5/10 Stroll delivered a much more competitive showing for Aston Martin. He joined Fernando Alonso in Q2, stayed out of trouble during a chaotic race and finished 12th, even though his teammate managed to extract more from the opportunity. Franco Colapinto – 7/10 After taking a 21st‑place start due to grid penalties, Colapinto’s 13th‑place finish was a solid recovery. He kept a clean run following his earlier costly mistake and made up significant ground in difficult conditions. Oliver Bearman – 5/10 Another low‑key effort for Haas. Bearman was eliminated in Q1 and, although he gained a couple of places during the race, 14th was essentially the limit of what he could achieve. Esteban Ocon – 5/10 Ocon expressed frustration with Haas’ qualifying strategy after exiting Q1 and never truly recovered. He made a strong start and battled well inside the top ten, but ultimately fell behind Bearman and could not adapt sufficiently to the changing conditions to threaten the points. Pierre Gasly – 5.5/10 Qualifying ninth was an excellent start, yet Sunday unravelled almost immediately. He nearly lost the car on slicks during the formation lap and eventually dropped to 16th as Alpine’s gamble failed to pay off. Carlos Sainz – 6/10 Williams lacked pace throughout the weekend, but a 13th‑place start was a respectable qualifying effort. His race was further compromised by contact with Bortoleto, which earned the Audi driver a penalty; consequently Sainz’s 17th‑place finish does not tell the whole story. Gabriel Bortoleto – 4.5/10 There was plenty to like about reaching Q3 in the Audi, but the race undid that promising work. Contact with Sainz earned him a penalty and left him 18th after having started inside the top ten. Sergio Perez – 4/10 Perez qualified poorly and never looked capable of making meaningful progress amid the chaos. Reaching the chequered flag was at least a minor achievement for Cadillac, but a 19th‑place finish capped another difficult weekend. George Russell – 8/10 Russell drove a far stronger race than his eighth‑place qualifying suggested. He made an excellent start, ran within the top three for virtually the entire distance and, although he could not match teammate Kimi Antonelli, was on course for another podium before a power‑unit failure halted him with five laps remaining. Alex Albon – 4.5/10 Williams suffered from a lack of pace from the outset, and qualifying 20th left Albon with a massive amount of work to do. His eventual retirement stemmed from a gearbox issue rather than a driving error, and there had been little indication of any significant problem earlier in the weekend. Valtteri Bottas – 3.5/10 It was a weekend to forget. Bottas qualified ahead of Cadillac teammate Sergio Perez but admitted his decision to run slicks was a gamble; he spun into the gravel at Turn 9 and triggered the first safety car period.
