England hopeful Gay will be fit for Pakistan opener

Emilio Gay, England’s opening batsman, is nursing a shoulder injury sustained while playing for Durham in their One‑Day Cup match against Middlesex on Friday. The 27‑year‑old underwent a scan on Saturday and will be evaluated at Beckenham, where Pakistan are scheduled to begin a warm‑up fixture on Wednesday. Gay will train with the medical team as part of a Professional County Club Select XI in a four‑day game for the tourists, but he will not feature in the match itself. England remain hopeful that Gay will be fit to open the first Test against Pakistan, which commences on 19 August. The injury has forced the side into a reshuffle after the withdrawal of former captain Ben Stokes and a knee problem that rules out Jacob Bethell for the three‑Test series. Consequently, Jordan Cox is set to replace Bethell at number three, while Dan Lawrence will move to bat at six and bowl off‑spin as England attempt to rebalance the lineup without Stokes. No additional batters have been summoned to the squad as cover for Gay.
