Football recap: Gorman could play 2 QBs against Bosco; Legacy, Moapa Valley win

Bishop Gorman’s quarterback picture is taking shape ahead of Friday’s highly anticipated clash with top‑ranked St. John Bosco. The Gaels opened the season with a 41‑0 victory over Losee, a contest halted at halftime by persistent lightning. Despite the abbreviated action, both senior Kansas commit Chance Thomas and junior Ace Amina saw playing time, alternating possessions in the first half. Amina started the game and finished 4‑for‑70 with a touchdown, highlighted by a 45‑yard strike to Brendan Koch in the second quarter across three series. Thomas, who transferred from Western (Anaheim, California), completed 2‑for‑21 yards and added a 1‑yard rushing touchdown in two series. Last season he threw for 3,327 yards and 33 touchdowns with a 71.5 % completion rate and seven rushing scores. Head coach Brent Browner declined to name a starter for the Bosco matchup but indicated both quarterbacks could see action. When asked about the possibility, he replied, “Everything’s on the table,” Browner said when asked if both QBs will play Friday. “This spot is built on a simple concept: competition. Everybody in the group is going through the same thing (the QBs) are going through. Everybody’s competing for a spot each single week.” He added, “We wish we could have had a little longer on the field so they could do more stuff, but they both did well,” Browner said. “That was kind of the hard part of not having a full game to truly give those extra (evaluation).” Later he noted, “We just have to figure it out and keep moving forward. They both bring two different things, dynamically two different guys. We’re lucky to have them both. We just got to figure it out and see.” The lightning outbreak caused a slate of cancellations across Las Vegas. Games not played or completed due to Friday’s weather included: Green Valley at Foothill; Eldorado at Las Vegas High; Coronado at Centennial; Spring Valley at Durango; Boulder City at Valley; Central East (California) at Sloan Canyon; Bonanza at Chaparral; Sierra Vista at Desert Oasis; and Sunrise Mountain at Western. Sierra Vista and Desert Oasis remain slated to meet Friday in their annual “Bell Game,” though it is uncertain whether any other contests will be resumed or rescheduled. Completed games on Friday produced several notable outcomes. Legacy overwhelmed Silverado 57‑16 after a brief lightning delay. Cameron Turner rushed for 200 yards and four touchdowns, while quarterback Jaelynn Love Carter threw for 150 yards and two scores. Kyree Perkins recorded a kickoff return for a touchdown and a receiving touchdown; Jaiden Swanson added an interception return for a score and a rushing touchdown for Legacy, which finished 2‑8 last season. Moapa Valley edged Beaver (Utah) 27‑21 when Kamden Drosos connected with Jett Levy on a 3‑yard touchdown with 19 seconds left. Drosos also contributed two rushing touchdowns, Briggs Hickman tallied 80 rushing yards and 44 receiving yards, and Ashton Hickman returned a kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown. Palo Verde secured a 34‑18 win over Desert Pines, with X’Zavier McZeal catching two touchdown passes. The victory marked the first triumph for first‑year head coach Dru Smith, a former Gorman assistant who becomes the program’s third football coach in its 30‑year history. Out‑of‑state setbacks struck Arbor View and Liberty. Arbor View fell 20‑14 to West (Utah), with two touchdowns nullified by penalty. Liberty led Mililani 24‑14 at halftime but were held scoreless in the second half, losing 31‑24 in Hawaii. Looking ahead, all attention turns to Bishop Gorman’s Friday night showdown with St. John Bosco. The Gaels, ranked No. 2 nationally by MaxPreps, will host the No. 1‑ranked Braves at 7 p.m., with the game streamed nationally on MaxPreps’ YouTube channel. Foothill will welcome Henderson rival Basic at 6 p.m. for the “Battle for Boulder Highway.” Palo Verde will host Legacy at 6 p.m. in a meeting of 1‑0 teams. Sloan Canyon will travel north to face McQueen at 1 p.m. Saturday at UNR, a rematch of last year’s 4A state title game won by McQueen.
