Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada is preparing for its annual Thanksgiving effort with a goal of providing 3,000 frozen turkeys and meal fixings to local families, homebound seniors and neighbors experiencing homelessness. The organization says approximately 400,000 Southern Nevadans — about one in six residents — experience food insecurity, forcing many households to choose between groceries and other essential expenses.
"For a family already stretching every dollar, the added cost of a holiday meal may simply be out of reach," said Sara Ramirez, CEO of Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada. "A turkey, a bag of groceries or a financial gift can provide immediate relief and help a family maintain stability during a challenging time. Every contribution gives our neighbors the opportunity to celebrate together and reminds them that they are seen, supported and part of a community that cares."
Food donations will be accepted Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Catholic Charities campus, 1501 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Monetary donations can be made online at the organization's website. The turkey drive is part of a broader Thanksgiving response that includes serving a free meal to about 750 people at the St. Vincent Lied Dining Facility and delivering holiday meals to roughly 1,800 homebound seniors through the Meals on Wheels program. Volunteer sign-ups are also available online.
