More than 1,400 Gazans have been killed in Israeli strikes since the ceasefire began on 10 October last year, according to Gaza's Hamas-run wellness ministry, whose figures are considered reliable by the UN. The ceasefire facilitated the release of thousands of Palestinians detained by Israel in exchange for the remaining hostages still held in Gaza. It was intended as an agreement to end the war that erupted after the Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, which left roughly 1,200 people dead and 251 abducted. Nevertheless, Israeli forces have continued to carry out strikes in Gaza nearly every day during the ceasefire period. Israel states that its operations target Hamas militants and accuses Hamas of violating the ceasefire. The Gaza wellness ministry reports that the total death toll from Israeli attacks since the war’s onset now exceeds 74,000.
