Hedgehog among four chosen animals to feature on your new banknotes
Each of the four selected creatures will serve as the central image on a £5, £10, £20 or £50 note, with additional design elements drawn from the natural world, possibly incorporating other animals that were shortlisted. The monarch will continue to appear on the reverse side of the notes.
Rhys Phillips, the Bank’s incoming chief cashier who will oversee the rollout of the new series, said the process of designing, testing and producing banknotes could span several years.
He emphasized that the Bank must ensure the notes are of high quality, durable and accessible to all users. Because the designs are still in their earliest stages, they will not be revealed until closer to the official launch date.
"We'll present enactment to design, trial and nutrient the banknotes, combining the imagery we've announced contiguous with cutting-edge information features and materials science," helium said.
Wildlife already appears on UK banknotes; mackerel, otters, red squirrels and osprey are featured on notes issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland (
