Henderson awarded $1M for assisting domestic abuse victims

Nevada ranks second nationally for domestic violence incidents, and Clark County had recorded 25 domestic violence homicides as of early September, a pace ahead of 2025 figures. Rep. Dina Titus and Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero announced a $1 million federal grant Monday at Henderson City Hall to address what officials call a gap in victim assistance.

The funding supports the Last Warning Shot Initiative, which focuses on three areas: improving training for police and prosecutors, providing consistent forensic examinations, and expanding intervention services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. "A key part of this grant is training for our first responders," Romero said. "So, they recognize high-risk situations and respond even more effectively."

The grant will support resources from organizations including Red Rock Forensic Clinical Care Consultants and S.A.F.E. House. Red Rock founder Kathi Thimsen said the investment gives Henderson "an opportunity to build a stronger interdisciplinary system" that improves access to care, supports survivors, strengthens investigations, and enhances evidence quality.

Titus noted her office has secured several million dollars in similar grants over multiple years, including a $300,000 Department of Justice grant to the Nevada coalition last week. Both Titus and Romero are seeking re-election this year. When asked about the timing, Titus said, "If this were the only thing we had done, then that might be something that you could criticize. But we've been working on this issue for a long time." She added, "I think those skeptics won't be coming forward on an issue like this. Or they'll be embarrassed and ashamed if they do."
