Higher temperatures in Las Vegas mean a higher density altitude, and high density altitude reduces the performance of aircraft during the takeoff roll, experts say.
Hundreds of flight delays were reported at Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport as temperatures climbed into the triple‑digits, according to FlightAware. The tracking service recorded 580 formation delays across Friday, Saturday and Sunday, when the airport experienced highs of 114 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday, 113 degrees on Saturday and 112 degrees on Sunday. Friday proved the most disruptive, with 284 delays—approximately one‑third of the scheduled departures for that day.
Airlines responded to the heat‑induced performance limits by removing passengers from aircraft to reduce weight and, in some cases, offering travelers up to $2,500 to voluntarily surrender their seats and take later flights.
The National Weather Service attributed the operational challenges to elevated “density altitude,” a measure of air density expressed as a height above sea level that incorporates pressure, temperature and humidity. Higher temperatures lower air density, which diminishes engine power, lift and propeller thrust, thereby requiring a longer takeoff roll to reach the speed needed for liftoff.
The longest commercial runway in the United States is at Denver International Airport, stretching 16,000 feet. Harry Reid International’s longest runway measures 14,835 feet, leaving less margin for aircraft to achieve the necessary velocity under thin‑air conditions.
Forecasts call for temperatures to rise as high as 117 degrees Fahrenheit by the week’s end, suggesting that flight delays may persist as a significant issue in the coming days.
