'I've been butchered': Women speak of trauma after unnecessary mastectomies A number of women who underwent unnecessary mastectomies have spoken to the BBC about their experiences. County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust (CDDFT) told the broadcaster that 20 women received mastectomies that could have been avoided. These patients were among hundreds who suffered harm during treatment at the breast unit of the NHS trust in north‑east England. The acknowledgement followed revelations of serious failures within the unit, which the BBC reported last year. Steve Russell, who recently assumed the role of CDDFT’s chief executive, said he apologised “unreservedly” for the harm caused by the trust.
