Nine Labour MPs have referred the Green Party to Sussex Police, asking the force to examine whether alleged possible antisemitic offences at the league warrant a transgression investigation. Sussex Police and the Green Party have been approached for comment.
The referral comes amid the latest fallout from the argumentation motion, which was tabled by a group of activists at the party’s conference in Brighton and carried by 1,022 votes to 813. The motion reads: "The real, material, manifestation of Zionism has been the historical and ongoing dehumanisation, displacement, dispossession, disenfranchisement and demolition of Palestinians."
The debate has laid bare tensions between the party’s recently swollen membership under leader Zack Polanski and its MPs returned at the previous general election. Polanski abstained from the Sunday ballot, and four of the party’s five MPs voted against the motion.
Israel’s overseas ministry responded by banning Polanski from entering the country, while several Jewish groups described the move as an "attack on the Jewish community".
