Defense attorneys wanted him to be released from jail in time for her funeral. The judge reduced bail from $500,000 to $25,000.

Judge reduces bail for defendant accused of killing daughter in DUI crash A Las Vegas judge lowered bail Thursday for Calvin Hayashi, 73, who faces charges related to a DUI crash that killed his 33‑year‑old daughter, Loretta Hayashi. Hayashi was arrested in May after a late‑day collision at West Warm Springs Road and Montessouri Street, near Rainbow Boulevard in the southwest valley. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, his vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic and struck another car. Loretta Hayashi was transported to University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. In a police report, Hayashi stated that he takes morphine at night and oxycodone in the morning to manage pain from a prior surgery. An officer noted that Hayashi exhibited pinpoint pupils, a sign consistent with narcotic use. His bail had originally been set at $500,000 in Justice Court. Defense attorney Charles Goodwin argued in a filing that the state’s claim—that Hayashi was driving “while actively ‘high off pain meds’”—was unfounded. “That assertion has now been completely debunked,” Goodwin wrote. “The official toxicology and laboratory reports have come back as below the per se levels and well within therapeutic ranges.” District Judge Christy Craig granted the defense’s request, reducing bail to $25,000. Craig said that if Hayashi is released, he will be placed on high‑level GPS monitoring and will be prohibited from driving. Deputy District Attorney Afan Tarar told the court that prosecutors are not seeking to detain Hayashi and asked that bail be reset to $75,000.
