A 15-year-old Las Vegas girl appeared in Juvenile Court on Thursday morning with her newly appointed attorney, three days after prosecutors filed a petition to transfer her case to adult criminal court. No action was taken during the hearing, but a November court date was set to review the status of the transfer petition.

The girl was arrested last week in connection with a shooting that sent another 15-year-old girl to the hospital in critical condition. According to the prosecutor, the victim was shot in the face with a shotgun. Las Vegas Metro police found the victim near the intersection of Mews Lane and Searles Avenue, less than half a mile from Rancho High School and immediately next to Bracken Elementary School.

A Good Samaritan, Kathryn Roszko, said she was flagged down by a group of kids who witnessed the shooting. She reported that the victim’s brother and his friend were on the sidewalk with blood-covered hands, screaming for help. Roszko said a police officer arrived at the same time and began rendering aid, asking her to stay with the kids to keep them calm.

According to the teens who spoke to Roszko, the incident began as an altercation between two groups at a nearby McDonald’s. One group said they were chased and harassed by the other, ended up in a back alley, and when they thought a fight was imminent, a gun was pulled out and everyone ran. The Clark County School District sent a message to Rancho High School families acknowledging the investigation and offering counseling resources, noting they had no further details to share as it remains an LVMPD investigation.
