Yes, our politicians and others may well be cynically advocating for higher voter turnout simply because they think it will help them or their party on Election Day. Yet two things can be true at the same time. It remains the case that if we wish to protect the precise rights we cherish under our Constitution—freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the right of self‑defense, and so on—which in practice can be summed up as the right to be left alone by the government, it is incumbent upon each of us, and deeply in our own interest, to make certain we are educated about the issues of the day, as well as about the candidates seeking office. It is then incumbent upon us to vote so that we can ensure we may continue to live in a society where we can continue to be “left alone” if we so choose. I want the same things as Mr. Kubacki. However, I believe that if we follow his approach it will destroy the very conditions that make those things possible.
