The NCAA classified the infraction as a basic breach of conduct. After Tennessee appealed an initial three‑game ban, the penalty was reduced to two games, meaning Carter will sit out the Volunteers’ opening contests against Furman on September 5 and Georgia Tech on September 12. He is slated to regain eligibility for the game versus Kennesaw State. Reports indicate Carter accepted the flight while preparing for the 2026 NFL Draft, then withdrew from the draft process after aggravating a foot injury that required surgery. He has since cut ties with the agent and reimbursed the full cost of the ticket, yet the NCAA determined the violation warranted a suspension despite those corrective measures. The case has drawn attention because Level III infractions typically result in comparatively minor penalties, making Carter’s punishment unusually severe for that classification. Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel publicly challenged the NCAA’s decision while expressing support for one of his defensive leaders. Heupel stated, “Arion Carter represents everything that is right about college athletics, dedicating each 4 years of his career to the University of Tennessee. His high character, loyalty and commitment within our program are unmatched.” He added, “We disagree with the NCAA's ruling on punishing Arion with a multi-game suspension this fall.” Heupel also noted that Carter is on track to graduate in August with a degree in public health and has earned Dean’s List honors. Carter is returning for his senior season after emerging as one of the SEC’s top linebackers in 2025. In 2025 he posted a conference‑best average of 7.6 tackles per game, earned All‑SEC recognition and finished the season with 76 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 10 appearances. Over his 31‑game career with the Volunteers, he has accumulated 161 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, one interception and one fumble recovery. Although he will miss the start of the 2026 campaign, Tennessee expects him to remain a central component of its defense once his suspension is served.
