Orangutans in danger as wildfires blaze through Borneo

An anemic orangutan was rescued in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, Borneo, amid intensifying wildfires. Indonesia has intensified efforts to address haze from the fires that stretch across six provinces in Borneo and Sumatra. The blazes have destroyed portions of the habitat that sustain hundreds of orangutans, jeopardizing the species’ future. "The concern is rather critical", said Karmele Llano Sanchez, CEO of Yayasan Inisiasi Alam Rehabilitasi Indonesia (YIARI). Sanchez added that the fires are "leaving [the orangutans] without immoderate nutrient oregon water". According to YIARI, the rescued orangutan will be taken to a rehabilitation centre for care and later released back into the wild once it has recovered.
