Eight people died in a shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, and the suspected shooter was also found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah told a local news station the loss of life and devastation were unlike anything he had seen in his more than 28 years on the force. "I’m not sure that the city of Erie has ever seen the loss of life and the devastation that we just witnessed," he said.

Gov. Josh Shapiro said Saturday he offered his administration’s full support to Erie Mayor Daria Devlin.

Erie is located about 117 miles north of Pittsburgh.
