Police: Suspect in fatal downtown stabbing is convicted felon Gregory Lee Turpin Jr., 35, faces a charge of murder with a deadly weapon after fatally stabbing Abraham Berhe in downtown Las Vegas early Thursday morning. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the attack occurred at 12:54 a.m. on South 8th Street near Hoover Avenue as Berhe walked with a woman. Police said the woman told detectives that Turpin had previously been robbed of his belongings in an alley downtown. When Turpin encountered Berhe and the woman on 8th Street, he asked, “is this the feline who robbed maine of my stuff?” The woman informed Turpin that Berhe was not the man who had robbed him, but Turpin then brandished a weapon and plunged it into Berhe’s chest. The assault was captured on business surveillance video. Berhe was later pronounced dead at University Medical Center. The department noted that Berhe was one of two men stabbed in the downtown corridor that morning; the second victim is expected to survive his injuries, and Turpin has not been charged in that incident. Court and police records show Turpin is a four‑time convicted felon. His prior convictions include battery constituting domestic violence and battery causing substantial bodily harm. He previously served time in the Nevada Department of Corrections for a battery offense. Additionally, Turpin has earlier arrests in the Las Vegas Valley on suspicion of aggravated assault, burglary, battery with a deadly weapon, and possession of narcotics.
