Quail Springs wildfire grows to 13K acres with zero containment

Quail Springs fire on withdrawn lands of the Nevada Test and Training Range has expanded to 13,500 acres with no containment, the Bureau of Land Management’s Nevada office announced Wednesday. The blaze in Lincoln County saw significant growth Tuesday, driven by hot, dry winds, rugged terrain, high temperatures and low relative humidity, according to the agency. Firefighters are employing both indirect and direct suppression tactics. Responding agencies include the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Wildland Fire Service and the Lincoln County Emergency Management Department. Steep, uneven terrain and extreme fire behavior are hindering direct attack efforts. The fire is primarily moving north; as it leaves the steep terrain, crews are working to suppress those sectors. Activity is expected to increase Wednesday afternoon, then diminish overnight. No evacuation orders have been issued and no publicly accessible structures are threatened. The nearby community of Rachel, situated about 150 miles north of Las Vegas, may experience smoke impacts but is not in danger.
