Raiders can learn from late-game gaffes in the NFL to master ‘fourth phase’

A string of high-profile late-game mistakes across the NFL this week — including the Washington Commanders letting the clock expire before a potential winning field-goal attempt and the Philadelphia Eagles leaving eight seconds on the clock for a Jacksonville kickoff return and walk-off field goal — has given the Raiders a library of teachable moments without having to live through the failures themselves.

Coach Klint Kubiak said the staff routinely cuts video of league-wide situations each week to reinforce coaching points, a process handled by a group that includes assistant head coach Mike McCoy, special teams coach Joe DeCamillis and Director of Game Management and Special Projects Rohit Mogalayapalli, a Michigan computer-science graduate who previously worked for the Ravens, Colts and Texans.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins said the team holds weekly presentations on situational trends and treats game management as a distinct "fourth phase" alongside offense, defense and special teams. "You've got to be a situational master," Cousins said, noting the emphasis dates back to OTAs and training camp.

The Raiders also use every walkthrough to simulate scenarios, knowing new wrinkles appear constantly. When another team devises an innovative strategy, the staff studies how to incorporate it, understanding that mastering those inches often decides the outcome.
