See tiny organisms on show in microscopic video competition

Nikon’s annual Small World In Motion competition, open worldwide to anyone interested in microscopic video or time‑lapse imaging, announced its 2024 winner. The winning entry, magnified to 100 times its actual size, shows hair‑like cilia lining the airways of a child with an uncommon familial disease. The clip was submitted by Dr Ning Xu, a researcher at Tsinghua University in China, who utilized a bid of analyzable airy waves to illuminate antithetic parts of the illustration in colour. Runners‑up in the competition featured a roundworm encountering a single‑celled organism and microscopic jellyfish larvae suspended in droplets of water. Additional highly commended entries included footage of bioluminescent algae and a tiny oversea slug.
