Thai school shooter learnt how to use guns via social media

A 14‑year‑old who opened fire at his home and at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Thailand, killing eight people and himself, had taught himself how to operate a weapon through social media, police said. Senior police official Atthapol Anusit told reporters on Sunday that investigators had interviewed 17 witnesses while examining the teenager’s motive. He added that the boy’s exposure to violent online content, anxiety over his studies and family problems, and conflicts with friends may have contributed to the attack. Authorities said the student, who attends a section of the prestigious Debsirin Nonthaburi School, first shot his grandparents at the family residence using a handgun owned by his grandfather. He then proceeded to the school campus and opened fire on teachers and students. When asked whether the act was premeditated, Atthapol replied that it was “probably” the case. Evidence collected by police includes the firearm used in the shooting, spent cartridge cases, the teenager’s mobile phone, and a weapon recovered from the bag he carried to school. Forensic analysts previously described the gunshots as “quite accurate,” noting that several rounds struck vital areas of the victims’ bodies. Atthapol said the investigation did not uncover any indication that the teen had practiced shooting or received training at a firearms range. However, the boy’s teacher had previously confiscated a BB gun that he had ordered online and brought to school. Thailand’s officials have vowed to introduce new gun legislation in response to the incident, which marks the country’s deadliest shooting in years. The attack occurred in Nonthaburi province, which borders Bangkok, and resulted in eight fatalities.
