Former Major League Baseball pitcher Tommy John, whose name became synonymous with the elbow procedure that transformed sports medicine, has died at the age of 83. Over a 26‑season career that ran from 1963 to 1989, the left‑hander amassed 288 victories, 2,245 strikeouts and a 3.34 ERA while pitching for six franchises, including the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Yankees. His most enduring contribution to baseball came in 1974 when he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing arm. At the time such an injury was regarded as a career‑ending blow for a pitcher.
Faced with imminent retirement, John agreed to undergo a pioneering procedure performed by the Dodgers’ team doctor, Dr. Frank Jobe, who replaced the damaged ligament with a tendon harvested from the pitcher’s forearm. Facing estimated 100‑to‑1 odds of a full recovery, John sat out the 1975 season before making a triumphant return in 1976. He went on to win 164 games after the operation—more than the 124 victories he had recorded prior to it—earning three 20‑win seasons and pitching effectively into his mid‑40s.
The landmark surgery, officially known as ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, was subsequently dubbed “Tommy John surgery” and has since salvaged the careers of thousands of professional and amateur athletes worldwide.
