UNLV relaunches RebelFolio, online student platform

UNLV is restoring RebelFolio, an online media platform run by students that had gone dark after the departure of a former professor and during the pandemic. T.R. Witcher, a UNLV lecturer coordinating the relaunch, described it as a newsroom and classroom combined, aiming to help students transition from academic work to real-world publishing.

Witcher noted that while students produce strong work in journalism and writing classes, their stories often go unseen after grading. RebelFolio will provide a venue for that work to be shared publicly, helping students gain confidence and build portfolios. The platform will be taught through a digital newsroom class and will feature longer-form content such as journalistic essays, think pieces, and arts and culture coverage.

Chanel Webster, a junior UNLV student and editor for RebelFolio, said she edited a story about campus fashion and healthy eating options for commuting students. She expressed excitement about having her work published and noted the platform is open to any student who wants to share their work, not just those enrolled in the class.

RebelFolio is expected to launch at the end of October or early November 2026, with students already compiling stories ahead of the launch. Witcher emphasized that despite perceptions of journalism’s decline, the field remains a multibillion-dollar industry, and motivated students can still shape their own futures through platforms like RebelFolio.
