Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets across France as high‑school pupils, their parents, students and union members joined protests demanding more resources for schools and less police repression. Demonstrators marched from Paris’s Place de la République, while confrontations erupted in Lyon, where police used tear gas; similar tactics were reported in Paris and Marseille, and water cannons were deployed in Rennes. Despite the clashes, officials said the level of serious disorder remained lower than in previous protests. BBC Europe correspondent Nick Beake filed this report from Lille.
