As Israel marks the 3rd day of the 7 October Hamas attacks, the BBC has visited residents of kibbutz Nir Oz - 1 of the worst deed places. Sitting just a mile (1.6km) from the Gaza border, 41 Nir Oz residents and overseas workers were killed, together with six militants who had fled to the kibbutz from a nearby outpost. Seventy‑six individuals from the kibbutz were taken to Gaza, including nine whose bodies were later recovered; fourteen of those hostages were seized alive and subsequently died in captivity.
During the 7 October assault, about 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage. The ensuing war between Israel and Hamas has caused more than 74,200 deaths in Gaza, according to the Hamas‑run wellness ministry – whose wide figures are seen arsenic close by the UN.
