Bishop Gorman’s football team is set for a high‑profile No. 1 versus No. 2 matchup early in the season, according to the latest preseason rankings.
The Gaels sit at No. 2 in the MaxPreps preseason poll released Monday, trailing only California power St. John Bosco, which holds the top spot. The two programs are scheduled to meet on Aug. 21 at Gorman’s Fertitta Field. A victory would place Bishop Gorman in position to pursue a fifth mythical national championship.
St. John Bosco and Bishop Gorman also occupied the No. 1 and No. 2 slots, respectively, in the preseason High School Football America Rankings issued last month.
Beyond the showdown, Gorman’s nonleague slate features a road trip to Mater Dei (Calif.), ranked No. 9 in the same MaxPreps poll, on Sept. 18. Three of the Gaels’ four losses since the 2021 season have come against Mater Dei, including a 24‑21 defeat at home last September.
Additional nonleague games include a contest against Columbus (Fla.) on Aug. 29 in Florida and a visit to Lone Peak (Utah) on Sept. 4. The remainder of the schedule consists of 5A and 4A opponents, as well as charter schools, after 30 Clark County School District programs opted for independent status and will not face Gorman or compete for state titles over the next two seasons.
Bishop Gorman concluded the previous campaign with a 12‑1 record, finishing No. 2 in USA Today’s final poll and No. 3 in MaxPreps. USA Today has yet to release its preseason Super 25 ranking.
The Gaels are also expected to take part in the Overtime Nationals, a four‑team national tournament described by Rivals that will crown a national champion.
