The start to the Basic Academy football season wasn’t ideal: Canyon Springs’ Javion Gunter turned the opening kickoff into a highlight-reel touchdown, weaving through traffic from one sideline to the other.

The remainder of the game, however, was much different. Basic dominated on both sides of the ball in a 35-6 win.

“I thought we played a well-rounded game,” Basic coach Jeff Cahill said. “We have a long way to go, but this was a good start.”

Basic quickly answered with a long scoring drive on its first possession, capped by a Jayveon Rose 4-yard touchdown pass to Louden Cahill. Cahill made the extra point to give Basic the lead for good.

Rose, Maximino Ramos and Lynn Saltmarch added rushing touchdowns for Basic. Louden Cahill had two field goals.
