Bishop Gorman’s girls golf team won the Class 5A team state title Tuesday in Reno, ending Coronado’s five-year reign as champions. The Gaels shot a two-day team total of 20-over 596 to win by 15 strokes over Faith Lutheran, who finished at 35-over 611. Coronado placed third at 40-over 616.
Junior Sol Choi claimed the individual state title with a two-day score of 3-under 141, becoming the only golfer to shoot under par in both rounds. Faith Lutheran’s Maddie Perez finished second at even-par 144. Choi held a one-stroke lead after the first round and shot 2-under 70 on Tuesday to secure the win.
Gorman’s victory marks its sixth team state title and second since 2007. Choi is the second straight individual state champion for the Gaels, following Samantha Harris’s win last year. The team led by two strokes after the first round and shot 4-over 292 on Tuesday, the only team to break 300 in the tournament.
Tiffany Park and Amelia Chen contributed strong second rounds for Gorman, each shooting 1-over 73. The win returns Bishop Gorman to the top of Nevada high school girls golf after Coronado’s extended dominance.
