The man died after going for a swim on Levante Beach
A British tourist has died in Benidorm in Spain after going for an evening swim, police have said.
A group of at least three British nationals were reported to have gone into the water on Levante Beach around 20:00 on Friday (19:00 BST).
Two returned to land but the alarm was raised after one failed to reappear from the sea. The coastguard also failed to locate him. Local police said a 31-year-old was later found lifeless on the shoreline.
The UK Foreign Office said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Spain."
Footage uploaded to social media shows a crowd gathering on the beach as police arrived at the scene.
Benidorm is a popular tourist destination for Britons, with more than 830,000 visiting last year, according to the Benidorm mayor.
