Chelsea nearing deal for Rayo defender Chavarria Chelsea are close to agreeing a transfer for Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria. The club has already settled personal terms with the 28‑year‑old left‑back and is aiming to secure a fee below £20 million, with confidence growing among all parties that a deal can be struck. Chavarria is regarded as a primary target for incoming head coach Xabi Alonso, who previously encountered the defender while in charge of Real Madrid during the 2023‑24 season. The acquisition would also bolster Chelsea’s left‑back options after Marc Cucurella’s departure to Real Madrid for £51.8 million in June. In addition, the signing adds further experience to a squad that has already welcomed striker Danny Welbeck, aged 35, from Brighton, and Jordan Henderson, aged 36, following the cancellation of his Brentford contract. Chelsea’s recent activity further includes the club‑record £117 million capture of forward Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, the £52 million purchase of defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, and the imminent arrival of midfielder Valentin Barco from partner club Strasbourg.
