Clark County firefighters return home after helping fight northern Nevada blaze

Clark County firefighters have returned home after spending five days assisting with the Ward Fire in eastern Nevada. The crews traveled to Ely, about 240 miles north of Las Vegas, where the blaze had grown to roughly 8,500 acres with zero containment, prompting evacuations on Aug. 3. Firefighters from the Clark County Fire Department, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue, North Las Vegas Fire Department and the Henderson Fire Department deployed engines to begin suppression efforts that day. Containment increased over the week, allowing the strike team to be demobilized, according to a Saturday release from the Clark County Fire Department. The Ward Fire now covers 8,909 acres and is 35 percent contained, with remaining crews continuing mop‑up operations along the established containment line. “The firefighters from Clark County Fire Department, Las Vegas Fire Rescue, North Las Vegas Fire Department, and Henderson Fire Department each returned safely and are glad to be home,” said Deputy Chief Brian O’Neal.
