Confronting gang members at the heart of Ecuador's drug battle

BBC correspondent Orla Guerin accompanied Ecuadorian police on patrol as they confront a sharp rise in drug-related violence. Narcotics continue to flow into Ecuador from Colombia and Peru, the world’s two leading cocaine producers. Domestic gangs, many tied to Mexican cartels and Albanian mafia networks, facilitate the onward shipment of the drug. According to Ecuador’s interior ministry, the country recorded one of the highest homicide rates globally last year, with over 9,200 killings.
