The UNLV football team gave up a 70-yard touchdown pass on just its third defensive snap Friday night against Hawaii at Allegiant Stadium.
After such an ominous start, the Rebels appeared destined for another defensive struggle—a pattern that had plagued them throughout the season.
Instead, the defense delivered its most dominant performance of the year, limiting Hawaii to 231 yards and three points the rest of the way in a convincing 38-10 victory that may have been the most thorough win of the season.
The Rebels improved to 9-2, a record made more impressive by how they’ve compiled it. Unlike most of their previous wins — built on frantic fourth-quarter rallies or offensive shootouts — this victory showcased the defense.
UNLV recorded three sacks and an interception. More importantly, the Rebels got off the field, holding Hawaii to 3-of-10 on third down.
Marsel McDuffie led the way with eight tackles, Aamaris Brown had five tackles and 1.5 sacks, and Jake Pope made a diving interception off a deflection.
The offense held up its end.
Anthony Colandrea was masterful, completing 21 of 26 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns. UNLV rushed for 217 yards on 41 carries and won the time of possession battle by 10 minutes.
UNLV closes the regular season next week at UNR in the Fremont Cannon rivalry game, looking to reach double-digit wins for a second straight season before playing in a bowl game for a program-record third consecutive year.
