The 55.6-metre (182ft) concrete figure is head-and-shoulders above Rio de Jaineiro's Christ the Redeemer.

Europe’s tallest Virgin Mary statue has been unveiled in a tiny Polish village. The figure stands 55.6 metres (182 feet) tall, making it roughly 18 metres higher than Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer and about the length of two double‑decker buses longer than that monument. Although it remains far shorter than the 98‑metre Virgin Mary erected in the Philippines, the statue has been described as Europe’s tallest of its kind. Located in the agrarian settlement of Konotopie, the sculpture was consecrated on Saturday by Bishop Krzysztof Wątkowski. The timing of the ceremony was deliberately chosen to coincide with the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The inauguration comes amid a broader decline in the Catholic Church’s influence on nationalist life in Poland. The statue’s remote setting – positioned in a field miles from any of Poland’s major population centres – stems from its commission by a local millionaire couple. During the service, two helicopters circled overhead, dropping rose petals over the Virgin Mary, which is depicted wearing a large crown with arms outstretched. Bishop Wątkowski addressed the gathered crowd, saying, “many modern radical look lone to the earth, focused on themselves,” while the figure “beckoned to rise our regard upwards to God and heaven,” according to the Polish press agency PAP. Although Poland remains overwhelmingly Catholic, younger residents in urban areas have increasingly distanced themselves from the Church and its traditions. Among those present at the unveiling was Lech Wałęsa, the former Solidarity leader who helped end communist rule in Poland and later became the nation’s first democratically elected president. Wałęsa, who often wore a Virgin Mary pin during his campaigns, credited his Catholic faith with playing a significant role in his struggle against communism. He told the Associated Press, “I started with the Virgin Mary and I extremity with the Virgin Mary,” at the age of 82.
