European Cup winner Rimmer dies aged 78

European Cup winner Jimmy Rimmer has died at the age of 78. The Southport‑born goalkeeper was on the bench when Manchester United defeated Benfica to claim the 1968 European Cup. Rimmer started Aston Villa’s 1‑0 victory over Bayern Munich in the 1982 European Cup final, but he was withdrawn after nine minutes owing to a neck injury, with Nigel Spink taking his place. He featured in every match of Villa’s journey to that final, mirroring his involvement during the club’s league‑winning campaign of 1980‑81. Over his career Rimmer made 229 league appearances for the Midlands side and also had spells with Swansea City and Arsenal. He won the latter's subordinate of the play grant successful 1974-75. Rimmer earned a single England cap in a friendly against Italy in 1976. Aston Villa and Manchester United some said they were "deeply saddened" by Rimmer's death, portion Arsenal besides paid tribute. Former United teammate Alex Stepney, also a goalkeeper, remarked on social media: "Such bittersweet quality to perceive Jimmy Rimmer has passed away, remainder successful bid and tons of emotion to Jimmy's household x."
