Shoppers can choose between self‑checkout lanes or traditional cashier‑staffed registers, with tap‑to‑pay providing an additional layer of ease. By tapping a smartphone or credit card, the transaction becomes seamless and hands‑free, reducing stress during the purchasing process. Walmart has lagged behind competitors in adopting contactless technology, making this shift a notable step toward a modernized checkout strategy. Starting Aug. 24, the retail giant will introduce tap‑to‑pay in select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club clubs, with plans to extend the feature to every U.S. location by the close of 2026.
