Five injured, one critically, in shooting at Virginia State University

Five people were injured, one critically, in a shooting at Virginia State University that involved multiple suspects, the university said. Officers responded to the incident outside a residence hall at approximately 01:28 local time (05:28 GMT) on Saturday. Five individuals, each suffering gunshot wounds, were taken to area hospitals. Four of the injuries were not considered life‑threatening. It was not immediately clear whether any suspects had been taken into custody; the BBC has contacted local police for comment. A temporary lockdown on the campus has since been lifted, but a "significant" police presence remains on site, the university confirmed in a statement. Chesterfield County Police are leading the investigation, assisted by other local law‑enforcement agencies and campus police. Virginia State University enrolls roughly 5,000 students and lies just over 20 miles south of Richmond, the Virginia state capital. It is also one of the nation’s historically Black colleges and universities, established to provide higher education to African Americans who were otherwise barred from most institutions. According to the university’s website, classes for the upcoming term were set to begin on Monday.
