After Carlos Varela was stabbed to death during a 2021 home invasion at his northeast Las Vegas home, his family says they are finally approaching closure as the man who admitted killing him prepares to be sentenced this week.
Five years after the fatal stabbing of Carlos Varela, his family says the long wait for justice is nearing an end as Carlos Bernardo Cabrera prepares to enter a guilty plea.
Varela, 53, was killed in June 2021 at his home near Christy Lane and Lake Mead Boulevard in northeast Las Vegas. Cabrera, 28, the ex‑boyfriend of Varela’s daughter Mariana, was arrested at the scene after allegedly stabbing Varela repeatedly and assaulting Mariana.
Cabrera told detectives he showed up unannounced, entered through an open window, struggled with Varela, then stabbed him.
Prosecutors originally pursued the death penalty but later agreed to drop it in exchange for Cabrera’s guilty plea to murder, residential burglary, first‑degree kidnapping, three counts of enactment battle, and one number of coercion.
Cabrera is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday by Chief District Judge Tierra Jones.
The family says they want the maximum penalty—life in prison without parole.
