A Kissimmee, Florida woman was taken into custody Friday morning after Osceola County deputies accused her of leaving her four children unsupervised for several days while she traveled to Las Vegas. Irene Miller, 50, faces four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm.
The investigation began around 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 when a juvenile called 911 to report that her 9-year-old brother had been injured by a dumbbell that fell on his head. Responding deputies found the four children, ages 14, 12, 11, and 9, alone in the home. The boy was taken to a hospital, treated, and released.
Miller told deputies by phone that she had left for Las Vegas on Oct. 18 and planned to return on Oct. 23. She said she had arranged for a babysitter from Tampa to visit in the mornings and after school but not to stay overnight. The children's father took custody of them following the incident.
Detectives met Miller as she exited her flight from Las Vegas on Friday and booked her into the Orange County jail. "The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate child neglect. These cases will be investigated, and charges will be brought against the parents who are not properly supervising or caring for their children," said Sheriff Chris Blackmon.
