When the Eldorado High football team takes the field at Chaparral tonight, they’ll be playing for more than just another win.
The Cowboys await in what many consider Nevada’s greatest high school football rivalry — the legendary Cleat Game.
The matchup has captivated both schools since the 1970s, transforming into something approaching a local state championship. The prize?
A bronzed cleat that will sit in the winner’s trophy case for an entire year. The cleat belonged to Merlin Olsen, the Hall of Fame defensive lineman who dominated for the Los Angeles Rams.
Eldorado enters riding the momentum of a hard-fought 7-6 season-opening victory, while Chaparral looks to bounce back from an 0-2 start.
Chaparral scored in the final seconds to win last season. Another close game is expected tonight.
It’s not the lone rivalry game on the docket.
The Duel in the Desert between Cimarron-Memorial and Cheyenne is also tonight. The schools have been rivals since opening together in 1991.
Additionally, neighborhood foes Sierra Vista and Desert Oasis face off tonight. And, old Class 3A rivals Slam Nevada and host Moapa Valley continue their rivalry of the last few seasons.
