It's another early start for the Vegas Golden Knights as they wrap up a four-game road trip at 10 a.m. today against the Detroit Red Wings.
The matchup is a quick turnaround for the Golden Knights, who on Saturday lost in a shootout at the Buffalo Sabres. Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said the team's effort was "a total lack of respect."
The turning point of the game — and the reason for Cassidy’s comments — came in the final minute when Tomas Hertl had a wide-open net to shoot into but opted to pass to Jack Eichel. Eichel couldn't collect the pass and turned the puck over.
Seconds later, Buffalo scored to send the game to overtime.
Cassidy also stressed the "stick fouls" that Pavel Dorofeyev was committing. Against Buffalo, he was called for tripping, which led to a Buffalo goal. In the prior game against the Columbus Blues Jackets on Thursday, Dorofeyev was assessed a double-minor (four minutes) for high-sticking.
The Golden Knights have struggled in games that have gone to overtime or a shootout, holding a 3-8 record in those contests. They've now lost four straight games that have ended in overtime or a shootout.
Detroit comes into this game with its playoff aspirations slowly fading away. While it is still in the race for the final Wild Card spot in the east, just four points out, the Red Wings have lost seven of their last eight.
Their most recent result was a 4-2 road loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday. The Red Wings are also the only team the Golden Knights have not played yet this season.
