A mound of rubbish at a major waste site buried several homes in the capital, the government says.

At least 30 people were killed when a rubbish mound collapsed onto nearby homes in Guinea’s capital Conakry, authorities said. Another 22 individuals were injured, six of them seriously, in the Dar‑es‑Salam district. "Significant" resources and units, including the subject, have been deployed to search for survivors after the incident around 02:00 local time following heavy overnight rain, the government said in a statement. One woman told local media that five of her children died in the disaster. Residents fear the death toll may rise further. Rescuers were seen using excavators to sift through piles of scattered waste at the site while neighbours gathered nearby. Guinea’s Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah visited the area to assess the situation and oversee rescue operations. Neighbourhood representative Lancine Sylla had earlier informed AFP that he feared a heavy death toll. "We have pulled out 18 bodies that were taken to the morgue," he said. A previous landslide at the same location claimed ten lives in 2017.
