Judge finds teen accused in South Point horse-stabbing competent: ‘These proceedings move forward’

A teenage competitor accused of stabbing three horses during a National Barrel Horse Association event at the South Point Hotel and Casino has been found competent to stand trial, allowing the case to move forward. The ruling was confirmed by officials, and the suspect's next court hearing is scheduled for Dec. 8 at 9 a.m.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police responded to the South Point barn area around 2:07 a.m. on May 30 after receiving reports that three horses had been intentionally injured with a sharp object. The juvenile suspect was taken into custody following the incident.

Investigators booked the teen into Clark County Juvenile Hall on 12 counts of willful or malicious killing, maiming, or torturing an animal, along with three counts of felony malicious destruction of property. The Clark County District Attorney's Office has indicated it is seeking to move the case to adult criminal court, though that transfer has not yet occurred.
