Gavin Caci, 28, was sentenced Thursday to 8 to 20 years in prison for a drunken crash that critically injured a UK couple and their 2-year-old daughter. District Judge Tara Clark Newberry handed down the sentence after Caci pleaded guilty to eight felony counts, including two counts of driving under the influence resulting in substantial bodily harm and two counts of reckless driving resulting in substantial bodily harm.
Prosecutors said Caci had a blood alcohol content nearly three times the legal limit after drinking excessively at the Marquee nightclub, where he worked as a promoter, during Super Bowl weekend. About 30 minutes before the Feb. 8 collision, he took his last shot of alcohol before leaving The Cosmopolitan in his Tesla Model Y.
The rear-view camera showed his car drifting onto a sidewalk near Harmon Avenue and Audrie Lane before striking Luke and Jessica Sadler and their child, who was in a stroller. The family was in Las Vegas for a wedding and was walking to dinner at the time of the crash. After the impact, Caci continued driving for several minutes before stopping at the Topgolf parking lot, where he was arrested.
During sentencing, Judge Newberry questioned Caci about the impact of his actions, asking what justice his family would have wanted if he had been the victim. Caci said he was 245 days sober and spoke about using alcohol to cope with the loss of his older brother. Sinay Nodarse, the mother of his 3-year-old son, supported him in court, saying her child needed his father and noting his growth in Christian faith and participation in Alcoholics Anonymous.
The Sadler family said they hoped Caci had reflected on and taken responsibility for his actions. Luke Sadler appeared remotely, reading a letter written by his wife, who, along with their daughter, suffered life-threatening injuries and spent weeks at University Medical Center before returning to the United Kingdom.
