The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association has chosen Cate Sgroi as its new executive director following an emergency board meeting on Friday. Sgroi, who previously served as an assistant director with the NIAA, was unanimously voted into the role by the NIAA Board of Control.
The appointment comes after the board’s initial candidate, Dr. Todd Cutler, withdrew from consideration following failed contract negotiations. Cutler had been approved by a 7-5 vote at the board’s regularly scheduled fall meeting in September, but ultimately decided not to accept the position.
Prior to the vote, the board had designated Sgroi as the first runner-up in the event the initial candidate did not accept the role. A motion to approve Sgroi as executive director had previously ended in a 6-6 tie during that September meeting.
Sgroi will become the seventh executive director in the NIAA’s history and is the first woman to hold the position.
