Prep football recap: Superintendent’s Cup finals create championship feel

The Clark County School District's 30 independent football programs wrapped up their first season outside the NIAA with the inaugural Superintendent's Cup finals Friday night, producing championship celebrations across three divisions. At Arbor View, the Aggies defeated rival Centennial 56-17 to claim the Division I title, marking the program's first football championship and the first time in school history the team ended its season with a victory. Arbor View, which lost the previous two state title games to Bishop Gorman by a combined 99 points, finished the year unbeaten in the independent format.

In Division II, Green Valley avenged a regular-season loss to Henderson rival Basic with a 27-16 win at Basic to capture the school's first football championship. Sunrise Mountain won a 46-42 shootout over Valley to take the Division III Cup, also earning the program's first title. Green Valley coach Brandon Harton praised the format, saying it gave students "an opportunity to have success and to bring home a championship in some way, shape or form."

Arbor View coach Sam Norris said his team ignored outside distractions from the district's split with the NIAA. "We've been preaching all year long, we can control things in our building," Norris said. "We can't control things that are going on the outside, so we just try to continue to keep going the way that we were supposed to." All 30 CCSD schools will remain independent next season with a similar tournament format, though division alignments may shift. The earliest possible return to the NIAA is the 2028-29 school year.
