Raiders training camp preview: Quarterbacks

The start of training camp offers a hopeful glimpse for the NFL as teams evaluate their rosters and aspirations. Contenders from last year aim to build on progress, while cellar‑dwelling clubs hope the moves made over the past few months will spark a turnaround. That is certainly the case for the Las Vegas Raiders, who believe they finally have the coach and front office in place to sustain success for years to come. Now head coach Klint Kubiak and general manager Fernando Mendoza must prove it on the field, beginning with the team’s first official practice on Wednesday. The Review‑Journal will examine the opening roster by position group each day, starting with the quarterback room. Roster: Kirk Cousins, Aidan O’Connell, Fernando Mendoza, Jacob Clark. Outlook: Mendoza is undoubtedly the face of the franchise and the unquestioned backmost of the future. That does not mean it is his job right now. There is a reason the organization signed Cousins despite holding the No. 1 overall pick and knowing they would use it to select the Heisman Trophy‑winning national champion. Mendoza could very well be ready soon, and the supporting cast around him could look strong enough that Kubiak and the rest of the decision‑makers might opt to keep him sidelined for a while. But such a decision will not be forced upon them, and having options is a healthy situation for any franchise. Cousins is a seasoned veteran who has operated within Kubiak’s system before and possesses a full understanding of how to execute it. He will enter camp as the favorite to win the starting role, and rightly so, although how long he retains that spot will depend on both his performance and Mendoza’s development. Cousins has seen nearly everything an NFL defense can throw at a quarterback and serves as a reliable presence to run the offense for now while the rest of the unit learns the scheme. He is also a great illustration for Mendoza to follow; while he will not act as an on‑field coach, he will simply go about his work and allow Mendoza to take from it whatever he chooses. Oh, and he can still win you a few football games. Cousins played at a high level at the end of last season with the Falcons and will look to carry
